You know you need help.

The harder question is figuring out what kind.

Do you hire a business coach? Bring in a consultant? Join a peer advisory group?

They can all be valuable, but they solve different problems. And choosing the wrong type of support can leave you spending a lot of money without actually fixing what is getting in the way.

Here is the simplest way to think about it.

A business coach helps you become a better business owner

A good business coach is not there to run your company for you.

They help you see what you are too close to see, make better decisions, create accountability, and work through the things keeping the business dependent on you.

That might include:

• Leadership
• Delegation
• Team structure
• Accountability
• Decision making
• Profitability
• Growth strategy
• Systems and processes
• Getting the owner out of the day to day

The biggest difference is that coaching is usually ongoing.

You are not just solving one problem. You are building a stronger business and becoming a stronger leader while you do it.

A business coach may be the right fit if:

You know what needs to change, but it never seems to actually happen.

Your team still brings too many decisions back to you.

You are growing, but the business feels harder to run instead of easier.

You need someone who will challenge your thinking and also hold you accountable for what happens next.

Or you are at the point where trying to figure everything out by yourself is becoming expensive.

A consultant helps solve a specific problem

Consulting is usually more targeted.

You have a problem. The consultant brings expertise, evaluates what is happening, and recommends a solution.

For example, you might hire a consultant to help with:

• Compensation structure
• Marketing strategy
• HR
• Financial systems
• Technology implementation
• Operational processes
• Sales systems

A consultant may do much more of the diagnosing and solution building for you.

That can be exactly what you need.

If your problem is, “Our CRM implementation is a disaster and we need someone who knows this system,” you probably do not need a general business coach.

You need someone who knows the system.

A consultant may be the right fit if:

You can clearly identify the problem.

You need specialized expertise your team does not currently have.

You want someone to evaluate the situation and recommend or build a solution.

The challenge comes when the problem looks tactical but is actually bigger.

You might think you need a new process when the real issue is that nobody owns the process.

You might think you need better employees when the real issue is unclear expectations.

You might think you need a new organizational chart when every decision still runs through you anyway.

That is where coaching often becomes more useful than another consultant.

A peer advisory group gives you something neither of those can

Business ownership can get surprisingly isolating.

Employees cannot always be your sounding board.

Your spouse may be tired of talking about the business.

Your friends may not understand why a $500,000 business creates a completely different set of problems than a $100,000 business.

And sometimes you do not need another expert telling you what to do.

You need a room full of people who understand what it is like to make payroll, manage employees, make decisions with incomplete information, deal with growth, and carry the responsibility that comes with owning a company.

That is what a strong peer advisory group can provide.

You get perspective from people who are actually doing it.

Someone else in the room may have already solved the problem you are facing.

Or they may ask the one question nobody on your team is willing to ask.

A peer advisory group may be the right fit if:

Your business is established and you are dealing with more complex decisions.

You want perspective from other business owners, not just an advisor.

You want a trusted room where you can talk about the things you cannot necessarily talk about with employees.

You value accountability and being challenged.

You want to learn from what other owners are doing well and what they have already learned the hard way.

So which one do you actually need?

There is some overlap.

A coach may give strategic advice.

A consultant may coach you through implementation.

A peer advisory group may include coaching, education, and expert guidance.

So instead of getting caught up in the title, ask yourself:

What do I actually need help with?

If you have one specialized problem that requires technical expertise, hire a consultant.

If you need individualized support to change the way you lead, make decisions, build your team, or run your business, a business coach may be the better fit.

If you are an established owner who wants a trusted group of other business owners to challenge your thinking, share perspective, and hold you accountable, consider a peer advisory group.

And sometimes, you need more than one.

A business owner might work with a coach while also hiring a specialized consultant.

A member of a peer advisory group may still bring in an HR consultant or CPA when a specific issue requires deeper expertise.

These options do not have to compete with each other.

They simply have different jobs.

Where Empowering Consulting Group fits

At Empowering Consulting Group, our work is primarily focused on the owner and the business around them.

We work one on one with business owners who have built successful companies but have reached the point where growth is exposing problems in their team, leadership, systems, accountability, profitability, or decision making.

It is not therapy.

It is not someone handing you a generic business plan.

And it is not us coming in and running your company for you.

We work alongside you to figure out what is actually causing the problem, determine what needs to change, and make sure those changes do not disappear the second business gets busy again.

That means sometimes we are coaching.

Sometimes we are looking at numbers.

Sometimes we are rebuilding accountability.

Sometimes we are talking through an employee issue.

Sometimes we are figuring out why every decision still ends up on your desk.

The goal is the same:

Build a business that works without requiring you to carry all of it.

Where The Beyond Average Boardroom fits

The Beyond Average Boardroom is different.

BAB is built around the power of the room.

It brings established women business owners together to work through the real issues that come with growing and leading a company.

Not surface level networking.

Not exchanging business cards.

Not pretending everything is going great.

The value comes from having other owners at the table who can challenge an assumption, share what worked for them, point out something you are missing, or tell you when you are making something much harder than it needs to be.

There is accountability.

There is strategic conversation.

There is support.

But there is also an expectation that you show up willing to work on the business and yourself as its leader.

For some owners, that is exactly what they have been missing.

One final question

If you are trying to decide what kind of support you need, do not start with:

“Which option sounds best?”

Start with:

“What am I trying to change?”

If you need expertise, find the expert.

If you need individual strategy, accountability, and leadership support, find the coach.

If you need a trusted room of experienced business owners who will bring perspective you cannot get inside your own company, find the right peer advisory group.

The important part is recognizing when continuing to figure it all out by yourself is no longer the best strategy.

Because at a certain point in business, getting better support is not an expense.

It is part of building the company you are trying to grow.
